Daleiden Family of Winfield and Winfield Township in Illinois

I am in the process of writing an article pertaining to the Daleiden family that lived in Winfield Township in Illinois beginning in 1856.

Christopher Daleiden Father/Husband
Margaret Daleiden Mother/Wife
Susan Daleiden Schlick
William T. Daleiden
Barbara Daleiden Armbrust
Barbara Daleiden (Sister Maria Philippina)

The family immigrated to DuPage County (Winfield Township) in Illinois around 1867. The first generation to live in the county were: Matthias Daleiden (the father), Michael, Christopher and Peter his three sons, and Barbara and Barbara his two daughters.

The family would be one of the founding families of St John the Baptist Roman Catholic in Winfield Illinois. They would also be well known landholders in the downtown area of Winfield. William B. Daleiden, Christopher’s Grandson, would become a much loved merchant and Postmaster in the town.

Christopher’s son William T. Daleiden (born in 1873) married Susan Elsen. They would have several children: William B., Katherine, Anthony, Edward, Mary and George. William B. would become a local merchant and own a confectionary story called the Bluebird Confectionary. William B. was also the Postmaster for Winfield for several years. In his role as the Postmaster and owner of his store he was well-known and liked by the people of the community.

Susan Daleiden, Christopher’s daughter would marry Casper Schlick a farmer from Kane County Illinois in Burlington Township in Kane County Illinois. Susan and Casper would later move onto her father’s farm on Mack Road in Winfield Township DuPage County in Illinois. The farm was located just three miles southwest of Winfield Illinois along the West Branch of the DuPage River on Mack Road in Winfield Township. Susan and Casper were my great grandparents. Susan and Casper would have three sons: Frank, Albert, and John. Frank is my grandfather and the father of my mother Louise (nee Schlick) Davis.

I will be writing more about the Schlicks and Daleidens in a future blog. I am also planning on writing an article for the DuPage County Illinois Genealogical Society’s bi-annual journal within this year. The article will form the core of a presentation to be given at the Winfield Illinois Library (0S291 Winfield Road) on Tuesday, May 17th at 7:30 p.m.

St. Johns Church Winfield IL 150 Birthday!

St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Winfield Illinois ( Winfield Township in DuPage County) celebrating its 150 birthday. This church was the center of life for this German Catholic community dating back to the early 1850s. One great resource for Schlick/Daleiden Family researchers with members of family from the area is the recently published history of the Church and the community at large by the St. Johns Church History Committee. Here at this link are PDF copies for the Church Bulletins from 2016-2017.

Welcome to the Schlick and Daleiden Family Blog!

This blog’s purpose is to distribute and document information on the history of the Caspar Schlick and Daleiden Families of DuPage and Kane Counties of Illinois.

Caspar Schlick, a farmer,  immigrated from Eckersbach Germany to American in 1852. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean via the port of Breman and eventually settling in DuPage county Illinois. His son Joseph Schlick and daughter Maria (nee Schlick) Schneider both eventually settled in northwestern Kane county near the communities of Burlington and Hampshire in Illinois. My mother Louise Schlick was the daughter of Frank Schlick. Frank (Francis) (my Grandfather) and his father Casper Schlick (my great/great-grandfather) and Frank’s mother Susan (nee Daleiden) Schlick worked on a farm once located on Mack Road in DuPage County between Winfield Road and Illinois Route 59 along the West Branch of the DuPage River.

Who am I?

I have been researching my Schlick and Daleiden family genealogy and history since 1982. I have a B.A. degree in History and a Masters in Library and Information Science from Dominican University in River Forest Illinois. I am a member of the DuPage County Illinois Genealogical Society. I am past editor of the Warrenville Illinois Historical Society’s Historical Update. I am a contributor to the award winning Encyclopedia of Chicago. I am also the Lead Volunteer Researcher for the St. James Farm Forest Preserve in Warrenville. I am the retired (Since 2022)  Administrator for the Messenger Public Library in North Aurora, Illinois.

My Mission /Vision for This Blog:

My vision is for this blog to be a resource not only for immediate family members but also for other genealogist researching the Schlick  and Daleiden family line in Illinois. In 2009 my wife Juliann “caught the genealogy bug” and has joined me in this endeavor. Julie and a distant relative of mine, Elaine Crawford,  sponsored a “Schlick Family Reunion” that was held at the Warrenville (Illinois) Community Building in August of 2010. This Reunion was such a success with over 70 people linked to the Schlick Family line in attendance.   — Kevin Davis
